OLIEDOM (in motion)

 OLIEDOM is a two-sided work about our pitch-black oil. A slick, commercial visual language collides with black asphalt paint that drips down from the letters like oil. The materiality of oil appears to move visually in and out of the older drawings.

On one side, the older drawings Overdruk and Buismans have been permanently attached to the canvas. In Buismans, a system of pipes runs through the ear and mouth, which made me think of oil pipelines. In Overdruk, the connection to oil is more direct: the image evokes an excess of oil. Yet everything remains contained within a frame, circulating in a closed system.

The word OLIEDOM is rendered in a commercially appealing typeface. After all, oil is sold as a product that must continue to generate profit, despite the problems associated with it. At the same time, black paint drips down from the letters. Is it a leak, or simply an excess?
